About Your Session
Your treatment session will begin with a full medical and lifestyle history. followed by a detailed description of any presenting conditions that may need treating, as well as a postural assessment
This is aimed at determining possible structural stress points that are causing imbalances in your body.
Your initial treatment will address the whole body, creating an awareness that allows it to reset "incorrect tension" in the soft tissues and prompting it to act as a whole unit again.
The Bowen Fascial Release Technique can be performed directly on the skin or through light clothing.
A course of 3 - 4 treatments, over 3 -4 weeks are normally recommended in order to address the body from all angles, initiating structural change. Treatments should be between 5 and 10 days apart.
Many people have follow up treatments every 6 weeks to 3 months for preventative and maintenance measures. We all inflict stresses and strains on our bodies and minds through the busy lifestyles we have adopted and are therefore constantly making ourselves vulnerable to injury and stress. Regular Bowen top-ups can help strengthen and balance ourselves, making us more able to deal with these environmental factors.
NOTE: A list of your regular medication must be brought to your first appointment and you should not stop any prescribed medication unless advised by your GP. The Bowen Fascial Release Technique is not a substitute for medical advice. If at any point it is deemed inappropriate for you to receive treatment, you will be advised to see an alternative practitioner of a suitable technique, a physiotherapist or osteopath for exercise advise, or in some cases back to your GP.
The Breaks
A unique feature of Bowen work is that between sets of moves the therapist will leave the room for 2 - 4 minutes allowing the body to respond to the information it has been given.
This is a key element of Bowen and is a defining aspect of the technique as well as being one of the most important.
The breaks allow the body the opportunity to create a decision about what action needs to be taken in response to the messages given.
And the body will respond. People often report feelings of heat or tingling in specific areas, and go into a state of deep relaxation or sleep.
The Reaction
Reactions to treatment are not uncommon, and actually demonstrate that the body is responding to treatment. It is vital that a client does not cease treatment in response to a strong reaction.
Reactions include thirst, tiredness, hot or cold flushes, water retention, headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased dream activity, mood changes, increase in original symptoms or re-surfacing of old injuries.
These are all positive signs that the healing process is working and these responses usually clear within a few days. Aftercare advice emphasises the importance of movement, the drinking of water and return for treatments.
